Bounce of a spinning ball near normal incidence

چکیده

A spinning ball incident at right angles to a surface bounces at an oblique angle and with reduced spin. Consequently, a spinning ball struck head-on does not rebound along its incident path, which presents a control problem in bat and racquet sports. The rebound angle and spin depend in a nontrivial manner on the coefficient of friction between the ball and the surface and on the elastic properties of the ball and the surface. Values of the normal and tangential coefficients of restitution coefficients are presented for a tennis ball impacting a smooth and a rough surface and on strings of a tennis racquet. The implications for spin generation in tennis are briefly described. © 2005 American Association of Physics Teachers. DOI: 10.1119/1.2008299

Grip-slip behavior of a bouncing ball

Measurements of the normal reaction force and the friction force acting on an obliquely bouncing ball were made to determine whether the friction force acting on the ball is due to sliding, rolling, or static friction. At low angles of incidence to the horizontal, a ball incident without spin will slide throughout the bounce. At higher angles of incidence, elementary bounce models predict that ...

Bounce of an oval shaped football

Abstract The bounce of an oval shaped football may appear to be erratic but it can be described by simple laws of physics. Projected at an oblique angle without spin or with backspin, a football usually bounces backward if the top end points backward on impact. Projected with topspin, a football usually bounces forward. A football incident with topspin will sometimes bounce to a much larger hei...

Finite element modelling and experimental study of oblique soccer ball bounce.

In this study, we develop a finite element model to examine the oblique soccer ball bounce. A careful simulation of the interaction between the ball membrane and air pressure in the ball makes the model more realistic than analytical models, and helps us to conduct an accurate study on the effect of different parameters on a bouncing ball. This finite element model includes a surface-based flui...

Characterising the Service Bounce using a Speed Gun

The angled bounce of a sports ball off a hard surface such as a typical tennis court has been the subject of many studies, for example Thorpe and Canaway (1986), Brody (1983), conferences and in-house reports. During play the tennis ball is hit at a variety of speeds, often with spin imparted to contact and bounce off the tennis court from a range of angles. The characteristics of these angled ...

Vertical bounce of two vertically aligned balls

When a tennis ball rests on top of a basketball and both drop to the floor together, the tennis ball is projected vertically at high speed. A mass-spring model of the impact, as well as air track data, suggest that the tennis ball should be projected at relatively low speed. Measurements of the forces on each ball and the bounce of vertically aligned superballs are used to resolve the discrepan...
